🕐 How overtime works
Classic bikes: free for first 30 min (members) or 45 min (Annual+). Every extra 30 min = $4–$7. The clock doesn't stop until you successfully dock.
🗺 The full-dock trap
Arriving at a full station? Your clock keeps running. Check 2–3 nearby docks in the Citi Bike app before your last mile — not when you arrive.
⚡ Free re-dock trick
You can dock and immediately re-unlock to reset your free window. Useful at busy hubs if you need a short break before continuing your ride.
📍 High-risk zones
Grand Central, Times Square, Penn Station, and Midtown offices fill quickly after 5 PM. The Top Return Stations list above shows real-time dock space network-wide.
30-second prep
Before You Unlock
Verify pickup first. Walk to a station with 2+ bikes — one isn't a safe buffer if someone grabs it first.
Pre-pick a return dock. Use the Trip Planner above now — not when you're one block away and the clock is ticking.
Know your overtime window. Dock availability is moderate — have one backup station in mind.
Rush hour = fast churn. 8–9 AM and 5–7 PM can empty a station in minutes. The alert banner at the top of this page activates automatically during peak hours.
